Storfjorden
Fjord ferry
Stranda lies on the western shore of the Storfjorden, facing the mountain Skafjell across the water. It is the administrative centre of Stranda Municipality and its largest urban area, the place where the municipality shops and works, with Norwegian County Road 60 running along the shore and a ferry crossing the fjord to Liabygda. The village of Helsem lies just to the south.
Hotellhagen, Hesteberget and the bays of Øggarsvika and Helsemvika are the green spaces locals know, but the fjord itself has written the village's history. On a January night in 1731, a landslide fell from Skafjell into the Storfjorden and sent a wave across to Stranda that flooded the shore, destroyed the church and swept away all but two boathouses. It was the first natural disaster in Norway to be recorded and documented in historic times. Stranda Church stands in the middle of the village today, and the factory that makes Grandiosa is a name every Norwegian knows.
That stretch of shoreline, from Øggarsvika to Helsemvika with the church in between, is the one people from Stranda know best. Wear it, and the parks by the water come with you.
