Gateway to Rügen
Did you grow up thinking every town had a sound on its doorstep and an island across the water? In Stralsund that was simply normal. The Hanseatic city was granted its charter in 1234, which makes it the oldest town in Pomerania, and its old town of Brick Gothic gables and churches is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, shared with Wismar.
Stralsund lies on the southern shore of the Strelasund, the stretch of the Baltic that separates Rügen from the mainland, and two fixed crossings, the Rügendamm by way of Dänholm and the Rügenbrücke, tie it to the island. The Knieperteich, Frankenteich and Moorteich wrap around the old town, so that the historic centre sits almost like an island of its own.
Saturdays at the Ozeaneum or the Meeresmuseum, the Kniepertor on the walk home, a city that was Swedish for generations: if those are the things you remember, the streets on this map are the ones you grew up in.
