Ever wondered how a Vestfold village ends up named after tree trunks? Stokke takes its name from the old farm of Stokkar, the plural of the Old Norse stokkr, a trunk or log, and the name has stayed with the place since the first church was built here, back when Stokke was a parish rather than a village.
Stokke lies between two towns: Sandefjord to the south-west and Tønsberg to the north-east, with the village of Melsomvik and the Tønsbergfjorden just to the east. The Vestfoldbanen railway runs straight through the middle, and the motorway passes a little to the north-west.
From the creation of Stokke Municipality until its merger with Andebu and Sandefjord, this was where the municipality was run from. The parish can count some remarkable names among its own: Frederik Stang, Norway's first prime minister; Henrik Johan Bull, a pioneer of Antarctic exploration and a whaling shipowner; and the opera singer Lise Davidsen. Stokke bygdetun keeps the rural past close at hand, and the protected Melsom plante- og dyrefredningsområde lies just outside the village.
The picture that stays with you is a simple one: the Vestfoldbanen train slowing for Stokke Station, right in the middle of the village.
