Woldberg

Have you ever walked the full circuit of Steenwijk's ramparts? It is the easiest way to understand the town: a ring of moats and earthworks around a compact centre, the largest place in Steenwijkerland and the natural hub of the Kop van Overijssel. In the local Low Saxon it goes by Steenwiek or Stienwiek.

What sets it apart is how much of the fortress survives. The moats and walls date from the Eighty Years' War, when Steenwijk changed hands more than once: it fell to the Spanish in 1581 and was won back by the Dutch in 1592. Before that, the town had already lost its early records to a fire started by plundering troops under Maarten van Rossum. Today Vesting Steenwijk is simply where people shop, meet and cycle home, with the Stadsmuseum Steenwijk telling the longer story and the Hildo Krop Museum adding art. Trains on the Arnhem–Leeuwarden line stop here, and Giethoorn, Blokzijl and Vollenhove belong to the same municipality.

Come back after years away and the outline is unchanged: the water, the ramparts, the Woldberg with its lookout tower. That shape is how Steenwijk says welcome home.
