From the Mural Kazimierza Deny, the football legend Kazimierz Deyna looks down on passers-by in Starogard Gdański, a town that takes its sport seriously and cheers for the basketball club SKS Starogard Gdański. Nearby, the medieval defensive walls and towers stand among shops and flats, and the small river Wierzyca runs past.
Muzeum Ziemi Kociewskiej tells the story of Kociewie, the region Starogard is considered the capital of. The name means old city, and it fits: the settlement was first mentioned when a Pomeranian duke granted it to the Knights Hospitaller. Later it hosted the sejmik of the Pomeranian Voivodeship and became a centre of Polish resistance to Germanisation under Prussian rule. The town is also home to one of the oldest vodka factories in Poland. Pałac Wiechertów, Ruiny Młynów Starogardzkich and the Tężnia solankowa are part of the everyday map.
For anyone who grew up here, these streets hold the walk along the Wierzyca, the old walls and the way home past the mills.
