About Starachowice

Known for

ironworking heritage

Known for

Kamienna valley

Known for

surrounding forests

Did you grow up hearing that Starachowice was built on iron? It was. A forge stood here in the sixteenth century, monks from the Cistercian abbey at Wąchock began a blast furnace, and by the nineteenth century the settlement was the centre of the metal industry along the river Kamienna. Between the wars its works made artillery for the Polish Army.

Yet the feeling most people carry from Starachowice is of hills and forest. The town lies in the valley of the Kamienna, a tributary of the Vistula, surrounded by woodland that is all that remains of the old Świętokrzyska Forest. Wierzbnik, founded by a bishop and granted its town rights by Sigismund III Vasa, is the oldest part, and the modern town was only formed when it merged with the factory settlement. Muzeum Przyrody i Techniki brings nature and industry together under one roof, and Odsłonięcie geologiczne piaskowców dolnojurajskich shows the old rock beneath it all.

Wherever you have ended up, this is your valley, your forest and your river. Keep them close.
