historic theatres

When Hannibal marched on Spoleto after his victory at Lake Trasimene, the colonists held the walls and sent him away into Picenum. The town had been founded by the Umbri, became a Latin colony, and centuries later ruled much of central Italy as the seat of the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto.

There is a quiet pride in that history, and you feel it walking the streets. The Ponte delle Torri, the Rocca Albornoziana and the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta are the landmarks every Spoletino grows up with, on a hill at the foot of Monteluco. The Arco di Druso e Germanico and the Casa romana are reminders of the Roman town underneath, and three theatres still keep the evenings busy.

If Spoleto is yours, your legs know every step of the climb from the valley to the Rocca — and this map is a way to carry it with you.
