Oldtidsveien walk
Spikkestad is the end of the line: the station where the local trains from Asker stop and turn back, and the village where the carton maker Elopak was founded. It takes its name from the farm on whose land the station was built, and it grew from a railway halt into a working community late in the nineteenth century, when a brickworks, a dairy, a school, a shop and a café gathered around the platform.
The village lies in the northern part of the Hurumlandet peninsula, closer to the Drammensfjord than to the Oslo Fjord, with wooded heights such as Gyriåsen, Ringåsen and Brenninga around it. Trains once ran straight on to Drammen, but when the Lieråsen tunnel opened, the stretch beyond Spikkestad closed and the village became the terminus of Spikkestadbanen. The story here reaches much further back, too: once a year the community walks Oldtidsveien, an ancient route past a burial site, from Gullaug on the Drammensfjord to Slemmestad on the Oslo Fjord.
Picture the half-hourly train from Asker easing to a halt where the rails simply stop.
