Oude Maas
At the end of the metro line in Spijkenisse, stands a sculpture of two whale tails, and one night in 2020 it caught a train that had run through the buffers, saving it from a ten-metre plunge. The Walvisstaarten have been a local legend ever since.
It is that kind of town: proud of its odd stories and its quiet corners. Locals still say they are going 'to the village' when they head for the centre, where the old Dorpskerk and the market square recall the farming and fishing community that grew up on a creek of the Oude Maas. In a few decades that village became a commuter town for Rotterdam, nicknamed Spike City by those who live there. In 2011 the town built seven bridges copying the imaginary designs on the euro banknotes, the Spijkenisser Eurobruggen, and the library known as the Boekenberg gave the centre a new landmark.
Picture the Walvisstaarten at the end of the line, a metro carriage resting on their tips: only in Spijkenisse.
