National parks
Strung along an unbroken chain of lakes and rivers in southern Kainuu, Sotkamo sits between the hills of Vuokatti and the sandy shore of Hiukka. Vuokatti, the most populous village, is a popular ski resort, with Lake Nuasjärvi at its feet, and the beach at Hiukka lines Lake Iso Sapsojärvi right beside the centre.
What makes Sotkamo stand out is how much it does at once. It is a pesäpallo town above all, home to Sotkamon Jymy, which plays at the Hiukka Stadium and has a long rivalry with Vimpelin Veto. It has two national parks, Hiidenportti and Tiilikkajärvi. Beneath the forests lie one of Europe's largest nickel deposits at Talvivaara, as well as silver and talc. Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Hugo Simberg came here to paint, and the wooden church in the village is the largest in Kainuu. The Nälkävuosien muistoristi, a cross for the famine years, is a reminder that it was not always so lively.
If you have ever cheered for Jymy from the stands or watched the lake turn silver from the top of Vuokatti, nobody needs to explain this map to you.
