Zamek Sielecki
At the Dworzec PKP Sosnowiec Główny, trains still run along the line that turned a village into a city. The railway that linked the Kingdom of Poland with the Prussian network ran across the land of a hamlet called Sosnowice, and from that moment the place began to grow.
What makes Sosnowiec unique is that it sat right at the meeting of three empires, a border town between the Russian, German and Austro-Hungarian worlds. Its districts are older than its name: Milowice was recorded in the twelfth century, Zagórze and Klimontów soon after, and the Zamek Sielecki w Sosnowcu stands in Sielec, another old village swallowed by the growing city. The Pałac Dietla and the two Schön palaces recall the years of rapid growth. The city itself takes its name from the pine forests, sosna in Polish, that once covered the area.
Today it is the largest city of the Dąbrowa Basin, set on the Czarna and Biała Przemsza rivers. If you come from Sosnowiec, you know it was never just a suburb of anywhere.
