Every design for Sorø

Sorø is known for its academy, a boarding school that grew out of a medieval abbey on the shore of Sorø Lake, and the town still takes its pace from it. Days run to the rhythm of the school, the lake path and the trains from the station in Frederiksberg, which take many residents to work in greater Copenhagen or Roskilde.

Walking through Akademihaven on an autumn afternoon feels like stepping into another century. Sorø Klosterkirke, where Bishop Absalon lies buried, stands beside the academy buildings, and the abbey gate has stood since the twelfth century. Because forest, lake and marsh kept trade away, Sorø never became an industrial town, and the quiet shows. Sorø Museum, Sorø Kunstmuseum and the collection known as Hauchs Physiske Cabinet give an unhurried town a surprising amount to see.
