Every design for Sønderborg

Ask anyone in Southern Jutland what Sønderborg is known for, and you will hear three things: the castle, the ring-riding festival and the old booze cruises across Flensborg Fjord. Sønderborg Slot stands in the centre of town and houses a museum of the region's history and culture, while the ring riding each July turns the whole town into one long celebration lasting several days.

For many, Sønderborg is the memory of a town that has had to rebuild itself. It was shelled by Prussian guns during the siege of the Dybbøl redoubts, belonged to Germany for decades and returned to Denmark after the plebiscite. Today it straddles Alssund, mostly on the island of Als with its western suburbs on the mainland, and it is a university town where the University of Southern Denmark trains engineers and Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester has its home.
