Border history
Somero has been known as a trading place since the fourteenth century, a market town for the farms of a wide rural parish in Southwest Finland. It lies north-east of Salo, between Turku and Helsinki, with Highway 52 running through the centre and the regional road towards the capital passing to the south.
What makes Somero unusual is that it has always sat on a border. The old boundary between Häme and Southwest Finland ran straight through the parish, south of the Paimionjoki waters, so the northern villages answered to Hämeenlinna castle and the southern ones to Turku. Uusimaa begins to the east and Satakunta lies to the west. Historically and culturally Somero still counts as south-western Häme, though it moved to the province of Turku and Pori and is now part of Southwest Finland. Someron Torppamuseo shows how crofters lived, and the Häntälä hollows keep a traditional farming landscape, part of the Rekijokilaakso Natura area, with a nature trail from the Häntälä village house. Rauli "Badding" Somerjoki, Karita Mattila and Kaari Utrio are among the well-known names linked to the town.
Whichever province it is filed under, Somero is simply home, and the walk through Kiiruunpuisto proves it every time.
