Müngstener Brücke
Solingen is the Klingenstadt, the City of Blades, and its name has long been stamped on fine swords, knives, scissors and razors from makers such as Zwilling J. A. Henckels, Wüsthof and DOVO. Even the coat of arms was designed by the town's medieval swordsmiths.
What makes the city unusual is that the trade is written into law: since 1938 the label Solingen has been legally protected, the first city anywhere to guard its cutlery this way, and around nine in ten German cutlery makers are based here. The craft was valuable enough to steal – in the late 17th century a group of Solingen swordsmiths broke their guild oaths and took their secrets to Shotley Bridge in County Durham. The Gesenkschmiede Hendrichs tells the story of the forges, the Klingenpfad walking trail threads through the districts, and the Walder Kirche and the Laurel & Hardy Museum add their own character. In the local dialect, Solinger Platt, the city is simply Solich.
Picture the Müngstener Brücke, at 107 metres the highest railway bridge in Germany, with a train crossing far above the valley.
