Sognefjorden

Sogndal or Sogndalsfjøra? Locals use both. Strictly, Sogndalsfjøra is the part of the village nearest the fjord and the shore, but to most people it is simply Sogndal, set where the river Sogndalselvi runs into the Sogndalsfjorden, a branch of the great Sognefjorden.

There is a warmth to growing up here that is literal as well as figurative: summers in inner Sogn are warmer and drier than on the coast, warm enough that tobacco was once grown here. Home means match days for Sogndal Fotball at Fosshaugane Campus, students at the university campus, juice and jam from Lerum, Stedje Church, and nature on the doorstep at Stedjeberget naturreservat, Loftesnes naturreservat and Friluftsparken Stedje. The village lies on the roads to Kaupanger and Fjærland, where a national road meets a county road.

Wherever you are now, you know the way back to the fjord.
