Known for

Eleven Frisian cities

Sneek grew up in the tenth century on a sandy spit of land, where a dike crossed the waterway that old documents call the Magna Fossa; you can still trace that dike in street names such as Hemdijk, Oude Dijk and Oosterdijk. Its city rights were made official in 1456, and with them came a place among the eleven Frisian cities.

The Waterpoort is the symbol of the town, one of the last pieces of the walls and moat begun in 1492, when Sneek became the only walled city in Friesland. Today Sneek is known above all for water sports: the Sneekermeer lies close by, and the Sneekweek is the largest sailing event on Europe's inland waters. Then there are the details locals are proud of. C&A opened its first shop here, KING peppermints are made here, and the town has its own dialect, Snekers. The Fries Scheepvaart Museum tells the seafaring side of the story.

If you learned to sail on the Sneekermeer, you already know which gate this map is pointing to.
