Słupsk is known for its Renaissance castle of the Pomeranian dukes and for the largest collection of paintings by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, both found under one roof on the banks of the Słupia. The town grew from early medieval Pomeranian settlements at a ford on an old trade route, gained city rights in the thirteenth century, traded as an associate of the Hanseatic League and served as the residence of the Dukes of Słupsk before passing to Brandenburg-Prussia and, after the Second World War, back to Poland.
The Zamek Książąt Pomorskich w Słupsku is now home to the Muzeum Pomorza Środkowego, and the Młyn Zamkowy beside it belongs to the same cluster of survivors along the river. A short walk away stand the Brama Młyńska and the Nowa Brama, two gates of the former defences, and the Baszta Czarownic, a tower whose name still makes visitors look twice.
Slavic, German and Kashubian names have all settled on the place over the centuries – Stolp, Stôłpsk, Słupsk – and each layer can still be read in its streets. Picture the brick of the Brama Młyńska mirrored in the slow water of the Słupia on a still morning.
