Skodjevika inlet

Skodje is the village of the old bridge: the historic Skodje Bridge stands just west of it, the one structure here that people from elsewhere tend to know. The village itself lies along the shore of the Skodjevika, an inlet off the Ellingsøyfjorden, and it was the administrative centre of Skodje Municipality until 2020, when the municipality became part of Ålesund.

What marks Skodje out is the way its name is said. It is written Skodje, but the people who live here pronounce it skøy-e, and that alone tells you who is local. Daily life is a mix of varied industry and fish farming, with Skodje Church in the village and the main road just beyond it: the E39 crosses at Skodjestraumen, and Valle lies a few kilometres south along the highway. County road 661 runs through the village on its way to Vatne. Nearby, Solnørvika naturreservat and the water of Fyllingsvatnet add a quieter side to the map.

Whether you moved away or never left, the first sight of the old bridge and the inlet is the moment Skodje becomes home again.
