In Skjern Enge, just outside town, you cross the two arms of Skjern Å, Denmark's most water-rich river, on ferries you pull yourself.
Skjern lies in western Jutland, on the north side of the river, a short way upstream from where it splits into the country's only river delta and flows into Ringkøbing Fjord. The meadows towards the fjord are laced with walking routes and bird towers. It was the last town in Denmark to be named a market town. In the centre stand the museums at Skjern Vindmølle and Skjern Reberbane, the green spaces of Anlægget and Byengen open up between the houses, and two sculptures by Piet Hein stand in the roundabouts.
Skjern Enge is the reason to wear this map: the river, the reeds and a sky that never seems to end.
