Art in roundabouts
Skive is known as the capital of Salling, sitting at the base of the peninsula where Karup Å meets Skive Fjord, an arm of Limfjorden. Its name goes back to an Old Norse word for a palisade, and in the Middle Ages the town and the royal estate here belonged to the Crown; kings stayed at Skivehus. Today the town is also home to Denmark's largest barracks.
Krabbesholm, the manor close to the industrial harbour on the east side of town, is the place to start. The Four Boxes Gallery stands in the grounds of Krabbesholm Højskole, designed by the Japanese architects Atelier Bow-Wow, and in Krabbesholm Skov there are kitchen middens from the Neolithic. Skive Kunstmuseum holds works by Christen Dalsgaard, the national romantic painter, and Skive Museum tells the wider story of the town and the fjord.
Then there is the stuffed polar bear at the art museum, a gift from Scoresbysund in Greenland, and the roundabouts, every one of them crowned with a work of art.
