Think Ski is named after skiing? Most people do, but the town takes its name from an old farm called Skeidi, from the Old Norse skeið, a running track for horse racing. That is why the coat of arms shows three silver horse heads arranged in a triskelion on a blue background. Today Ski is the largest town in Follo and the working centre of Nordre Follo, with the hospital, the district court and the police station.
For many people, Ski is the feeling of the morning train. The Østfold Line splits here into its eastern and western branches, and plenty of locals ride it into Oslo every day. Ski Storsenter and the brick buildings around the station set the tone of the centre, while rolling hills of forest and farmland begin just beyond it, with Midtsjøvann naturreservat and the green space of Vestråtparken close by. People have lived here for a very long time: Stone Age tools still turn up when the fields are ploughed.
If you have waited on the platform at Ski, or had to explain to a visitor that the name has nothing to do with skiing, this map is yours.
