Royal town charter
In the Middle Ages the Skawinka briefly marked the border between Silesia and Lesser Poland, and a stronghold here protected Kraków from the south. The town that grew beside it, granted Magdeburg rights by Casimir the Great and long held by the Benedictines of Tyniec, still follows the winding river a short way south-west of the city.
The Dwór Korabniki, a Renaissance palace built in the sixteenth century by Paweł Korytko, is its most striking building, while the Błonia Skawińskie and the Park Miejski im. Józefa Piłsudskiego give the town room to breathe. Industry arrived later with an aluminium works and a power station; today the air is far cleaner than it was, and the Natura 2000 meadows of the Skawiński Obszar Łąkowy lie within the town.
Wear Skawina for the Dwór Korabniki and the river that named it – a town with Kraków next door and a story of its own.
