Standing beside the Parowóz Pt47-13, a steam locomotive kept on display, you see at once what made Skarżysko-Kamienna: the railway. Two main lines, Kraków – Warsaw and Sandomierz – Koluszki, cross here, and the town grew up around the junction and the foundries and munitions works that followed it.
There is a quiet pride in that working past, and in the woods that ring the town on every side. Locals simply call it Skarżysko; until 1928 it was just Kamienna, after the river that runs through it, still left wild along much of its course within the town. The Bazylika Najświętszej Maryi Panny Ostrobramskiej rises above the rooftops, and the Zabytkowy domek dróżnika, a little lineman's cottage, recalls the early days of the line.
Look closely at the map and it is all there: the tracks fanning out from the junction, with the Kamienna winding its way beneath them.
