River Glomma
Kongsvingerbanen railway
Water-ski park
Skarnes Station opened on the Kongsvingerbanen railway in 1862, and the railway and the river Glomma have defined the village ever since. Skarnes is the administrative centre of Sør-Odal Municipality, halfway between the villages of Disenå and Sander, with the E16 running through it as well. The new municipal hall was completed in 2010, and Oppstad Church stands a few kilometres to the north. Skarnes is also the name of the old farm here.
Odalstunet, the local museum, keeps the story of the district, while the heights of Skarnesberget and Spiksetberget frame the village. Among the people from Skarnes are the painter Kåre Tveter and the musician Øystein Sunde. Children from across the municipality go to school here, since Glommasvingen skole is the only primary school in Sør-Odal.
The map shows the village in its three parts: the original Skarnes by the bridge, Tronbøl to the south on the same side of the Glomma, and Korsmo across the river. For anyone who grew up here, crossing that bridge was the walk to school, to the sports hall and back home again.
