Fishing port
Northern tip of Denmark
Have you stood where the land runs out? Skagen is the northernmost town in Denmark, on the east coast of the Skagen Odde peninsula at the very tip of Jutland, and its name simply means a narrow, high point of land.
Den Tilsandede Kirke shows what the wind can do here. The medieval church of St Lawrence stood just outside the village until drifting sand buried it, and Skagen Church was built to replace it. Skagen began as a fishing village famed for herring, and the Port of Skagen is still Denmark's main fishing port, so fresh fish is a staple on the menus. Late in the nineteenth century the seascapes, the fishermen and the evening light drew the group of painters now known as the Skagen Painters, and their haunts are landmarks today: Brøndums Hotel, Skagens Museum and Anchers Hus, the home of Michael and Anna Ancher. The lighthouses Skagen Fyr and Skagens Vippefyr belong to the same coastline, and Kystmuseet Skagen tells more of life on this coast. The narrow-gauge Skagensbanen ends at the most northerly railway station in the country.
If you grew up here, the map holds the evening light, the fishing boats in the harbour and the road out to the tip.
