Museum Jorn
Silkeborg sits on the Gudenå in the lake highlands of Søhøjlandet, just west of the geographical centre of Denmark, with Silkeborg Langsø dividing the town north from south before it flows into the river. Around it lie the country's largest forest district and lake after lake, which is why Danes call it the outdoor capital of Denmark.
For many, Silkeborg means a boat trip from the little harbour across Silkeborgsøerne towards Himmelbjerget, ideally on the old steamship Hjejlen. It means the bog finds of the area, Tollundmanden and Grauballemanden, and the paper mill around which the modern town grew. It also means Silkeborg Bad, once the Gestapo's Danish headquarters and now KunstCentret Silkeborg Bad, and Silkeborg Bunkermuseum in one of the old bunkers.
Then there is Museum Jorn, with its large collection of work by Asger Jorn, the COBRA painter whose home town this was. Wear the town and you wear the lakes, the forest and the painter's own streets.
