Three times the Polish nobility gathered in Sieradz to choose a monarch, and in 1383 they acclaimed Jadwiga, daughter of Louis of Hungary, as their queen here. First mentioned in the Bull of Gniezno of 1136, Sieradz is one of the oldest towns in Poland and the capital of the historic Sieradz Land.
The Bazylika Kolegiacka Wszystkich Świętych is where that long history feels closest. Nearby stand the Kościół pw. Świętego Ducha and the Muzeum Okręgowe w Sieradzu, while the Sieradzki Park Etnograficzny gathers the old rural life of the region in one place. The town has always taken people in: centuries ago it welcomed settlers from Scotland and the Netherlands, and merchants from Spain and Portugal came to trade. Swedish invasions, plagues, fires and floods later cost it that importance, yet it rebuilt and carried on.
For those who call it home, Sieradz is the river, the collegiate church and the road that runs on towards Wrocław. Picture the Warta sliding past below the old town on a summer evening, and that is Sieradz.
