Oldest bank
Founded as a small Roman military colony called Saena Iulia, Siena grew into one of the great banking cities of medieval Europe, and the Monte dei Paschi, operating here since 1472, is the oldest bank in the world.
There is a particular pride in belonging here. Twice a year the whole city crowds into Il Campo for the Palio, the horse race that stops everything. On ordinary days the same square is where people meet friends in front of the Palazzo Pubblico. Uphill stands the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, and the streets inside the Mura di Siena still follow their medieval lines.
