University town

Siegen is the birthplace of the Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens, which is why it calls itself the Rubensstadt, and it is the southernmost city of Westphalia, set among forested hills not far from the point where three German states meet.

Come over the hills and drop into the valley, and the first thing you feel is green. The city sits in a branching basin of the upper Sieg, with side valleys running off in every direction, and wherever the slopes are not built on they are covered in coppice woodland. Roughly three fifths of the city's land is wooded, enough to rank it among the greenest cities in Germany. To the north lies the Sauerland, to the north-west the Rothaargebirge, to the south-west the Westerwald, and the Pfannenberg on the southern edge is the highest point. The university keeps the streets lively, and the city sits on the Orange Route, the holiday road that links places tied to the House of Orange.

The Oberes Schloss stands for all of it, the landmark every visitor is shown first. Put it on your chest and the whole wooded valley comes with it.
