Sandebukta bay
IL Sandvin
Bathing beach
Selvik is a village built on the shore of Sandebukta, a bay in Vestfold, and it packs a lot of life into very little ground: a few thousand people on a narrow strip of land between the water and the wooded rise of Kaståsen. For its size it is one of the most densely settled places in Holmestrand Municipality.
Look at where it sits and the rest of the area falls into place around it. Sande i Vestfold lies a short way inland to the northwest, the town of Holmestrand further south along the coast, and across the bay the village of Berger looks out over the mouth of the Drammensfjorden. Selvik itself faces the water. Nordre Jarlsberg badeplass, the bathing spot at the bottom of the village, is where summer days end, and the sports club IL Sandvin, based here, is where much of the rest of the year is spent.
It is a small place, and the people who grew up in it know every corner of it: the climb up Kaståsen, the walk down to the beach, the bay that was always there at the end of the road. On a map it is a little patch of streets on the edge of Sandebukta, and that is exactly how it is remembered.
