Seinäjoki straddles a river of the same name whose deep channel and steep, wall-like banks set it apart from the low-banked rivers elsewhere in Ostrobothnia; the name literally means wall river. Around it the plains of South Ostrobothnia open out flat and wide, and the city sits at their centre as the region's capital.
For those who call it home, Seinäjoki feels like a place that keeps growing and keeps people close. It began as a cluster around the Östermyra iron and gunpowder works, and Törnävän kartano still stands from those years. Every year brings Tangomarkkinat, the tango festival, and the Provinssi music festival, while Alvar Aalto's civic centre, with the Lakeuden Risti church, the city hall and the library, gives the town its most recognisable skyline. Etelä-Pohjanmaan maakuntamuseo, Kirkkopuisto and Kalevan navetta are all part of the familiar route through town.
If you have heard the tango drifting across an evening here, or watched the cross of Lakeuden Risti come into view on the drive home, you already know every street on this map.
