Main triangle
Schweinfurt stands at the start of the Main triangle, where the river begins its great loop through Lower Franconia, and since Brexit the geographical centre of the European Union has lain south-west of the city. Around it spreads the Franconian wine country, with the Rhön and the Haßberge within easy reach.
What sets the city apart is industry on a grand scale. SKF, Schaeffler, ZF Friedrichshafen and Fresenius Medical Care all run their largest plants here, and the freewheel and the coaster brake were both invented in Schweinfurt by Ernst Sachs. It is also one of the oldest cities in Bavaria, first recorded in 791, and the Leopoldina, the oldest permanently existing academy of natural sciences in the world, was founded here in 1652.
For green space there is the Wildpark an den Eichen and the Saumain nature reserve. And if you know the Alter Kran down by the harbour, have looked at art in the Museum Georg Schäfer and still call the place Schweifert, you know exactly where to look on this map.
