Every design for Schijndel

Schijndel is a Brabant town with a long memory and, thanks to the New Kids films, an unlikely bit of screen fame: in New Kids Turbo it is the place hit by a bomb meant for neighbouring Maaskantje. Before all that, it was farmland cleared from fertile woodland along the river Aa in the early Middle Ages, south-east of 's-Hertogenbosch in the Meierij.

There is a quiet steadiness to the place. Its population has barely shifted in decades, and locals still give it a name of their own in dialect: Skèndel. Wijbosch has grown up against it, and since Schijndel joined Veghel and Sint-Oedenrode in Meierijstad it has been part of the largest municipality in North Brabant by area. Green corners such as De Blekert Heempark and the Beatrix Jubileum Bos sit close to the everyday streets, and the Hervormde Kerk keeps watch over centuries of fires, wars and rebuilding.

Museum Jan Heestershuis is the kind of local landmark you only truly value once you have moved away, and a good reason to keep Schijndel's streets with you.
