Marshal Davout
Orge valley
Savigny-sur-Orge takes its name from Sabiniacum, the estate of a Gallo-Roman landowner called Sabinius, and centuries later its château belonged to Louis-Nicolas Davout, one of Napoleon's marshals, who also served as the town's mayor.
Today that fifteenth-century château houses the Lycée Jean-Baptiste Corot, and for a great many local teenagers it is simply school. The main square still bears Davout's name, the Musée Davout keeps his memory, and the Lions of Savigny-sur-Orge play baseball at national level. There is also the story of Port-Aviation, the world's first purpose-built aerodrome, which opened next door in Viry-Châtillon, where distinguished visitors stepped off the train at Savigny station. The town sits on slopes above the Orge and the Yvette, and the climb from the valley to the plateau is part of every day.
If you know that climb from the station by heart, and still count the Saviniens as your people, this map was drawn with you in mind.
