Sarpsborg is known for its waterfall. Sarpefossen, where the Glomma crashes over a ridge of rock, is the reason the town exists and half the reason for its name: Olav Haraldsson, later Saint Olaf, built a fortress here and called the place Borg, and the falls were added in front of it afterwards. Since then the town has been burned to the ground by Swedish invaders, seen half its people move downriver to found Fredrikstad, and watched much of its rebuilt streets slide into the Glomma in a great mudslide. Each time it came back.

The centre stands on Tunøya, up on the ridge of Østfoldraet, with the Glomma on one side and a chain of lakes and rivers on the other, and the coast of the Oslofjord within the municipality. Sweden is only a short way off.

Stand on the bank below the falls and you see what built the town: white water thundering over the rock, and Borregaard's factories stretched for kilometres along the riverbank beyond.
