Known for

Carpathian foothills

Sanok sits on the San where the land begins to fold into the Carpathians, a hilly town in the Sanok basin with the Salt Mountains, Góry Słonne, closing it in from the south and east. The river runs right through it, splitting the town into an eastern and a western half, and warm foehn winds blow up from the south through the mountain passes.

Life here has an easy mix of old and new. The Royal Free City of Sanok, to give it its full name, has a chemical industry and an early oil history, yet it is the castle and the Old Town that people show their visitors. Zamek Królewski stands at the foot of Castle Hill above the river, the Muzeum Budownictwa Ludowego w Sanoku gathers the wooden buildings of the surrounding villages, and the mound of Kopiec Adama Mickiewicza honours the poet. Beyond the edge of town, a long trail for hikers and cyclists leads off into the hills, and the Bieszczady are never far away.

Coming back down the San valley and catching sight of the castle above the water is what home looks like for anyone from Sanok.
