The Sieg
Ever had to explain that Sankt Augustin is not simply the eastern edge of Bonn? The town has a name of its own, after Saint Augustine of Hippo, patron saint of the Steyler missionaries who opened their monastery near today's town centre in 1913, and a story of its own: a municipality formed in 1969 that gained town rights in 1977. It is the second-largest town in the Rhein-Sieg district, and the headquarters of GSG 9 and the Federal Police air group are here too.
Ask anyone who grew up here and the memories are local ones: summer evenings by the Sieg, which forms the town's northern boundary, a walk round the Grüne Mitte, a look at Burg Niederpleis, a school trip to the Haus der Völker und Kulturen. Hangelar, Mülldorf, Niederpleis and Menden each keep their own character, even where the houses have long since grown together.
Twinned with Grantham, the town once welcomed Margaret Thatcher, who came with Helmut Kohl. If that story was told at your kitchen table, or you know exactly where Beuel stops and Sankt Augustin begins, this map is yours to wear.
