About Sandnessjøen

Egils saga

Known for

Hurtigruten port

Did you know Sandnessjøen turns up in Egils saga? The great farm at Sandnes was home to the chieftain Torolv Kveldulvsson, and the town still carries its name. Its spot by the shipping lane made it a gathering point for skippers for centuries, and it was granted trading privileges long ago, yet it only became a town in modern times.

There is a feeling here of standing at the hub of the coast, with De Syv Søstre, the Seven Sisters range, rising just east of the town on the island of Alsta. Steamships began calling, the Helgeland steamship company moved its administration in, and today the Hurtigruten docks every day while fast boats fan out to the islands. Høvdingsete på Sandnes keeps the chieftain's story, and Sandnessjøen krigsminnesamling, with its WW2 Kanon, recalls the war years.

If you have stood on the quay with the Seven Sisters at your back, this map is for you.
