Sandefjord is known as the whaling capital of Norway, the Viking 'capital' and, every summer, the Bathing City. Whaling made it the richest town in the country, and the Hvalfangstmuseet, the only museum in Europe dedicated to whaling, tells that story, while Hvalfangstmonumentet honours the whalers and the whale catcher Hvalbåten «Southern Actor» still calls Sandefjord home.
The town lies at the head of the Sandefjordsfjorden on the Skagerrak coast of southern Vestfold, spreading out along both sides of the Mefjorden on the peninsulas of Vesterøya and Østerøya. That long, broken shoreline of beaches, coves and old resort spas is what fills the town with visitors each summer. On the eastern edge of town lies Gokstadhaugen, the mound where the Gokstad ship was found, a reminder that Vikings lived well by this fjord.
So whether you swam off the rocks at Vesterøya as a child or you come back every summer, this is the stretch of coast that is yours.
