San Giuliano Milanese lies just southeast of Milan, on the open Lombard plain where the old road to Lodi leaves the city behind. Its territory gathers a string of former villages — Zivido, Civesio, Sesto Ulteriano, Viboldone — that were merged step by step until a single town remained, and between them the fields have not entirely given way to warehouses and motorway junctions.
For many people here the place means a morning train from Borgolombardo and the quiet that comes back in the evening. Green space matters: Parco Serenella and the Parco Nord di San Giuliano Milanese are where families walk, run and let the children loose, while the bell tower of the Abbey of Viboldone still rises above the farmland at the edge of town, as it did when the Umiliati monks lived there. It is the same tower that stands on the municipal coat of arms.
Then there is Castello Brivio, the fortified residence that gives the town its most storied outline. Put it on a shirt and you carry San Giuliano's oldest silhouette with you, well beyond Milan's ring roads.
