Beach holidays

On the Lungomare at San Benedetto del Tronto the palms come in their thousands, Canary Island date palms and Washingtonias lined up along the seafront that gave this stretch of coast its name, the Riviera of the Palms. On one side lies the Adriatic; behind the town, low coastal hills rise towards the old quarter.

The Faro di San Benedetto del Tronto stands over a harbour that is one of the biggest on the Adriatic and home to one of its largest fishing fleets. The town sits at the mouth of the Tronto, the southernmost seaside comune in the Marche, with four streams, the Albula among them, running down to the sea inside its boundaries. Winters are mild, snow is a rare visitor, and summers belong to families on the beach: the first bathing establishment here opened in 1865, among the oldest in Italy. The Museo del Mare e delle Anfore and the Monumento al pescatore keep the working sea in view.

If you learned to swim off this beach, or waited on the quay for a boat to come in, this is your stretch of coast, every palm of it.
