Säkylänharju ridge
Medieval travellers from Southwest Finland passed through Säkylä on their way to Köyliö, where Bishop Henrik was killed, and soldiers marched the Huovintie along the crest of the Säkylänharju ridge between Turku and Kokemäenkartano.
Säkylän Talvi- ja jatkosotamuseo tells a more recent chapter, and since the Pori Brigade moved into the Huovinrinne garrison the army has been part of everyday life. The wooden church in Iso-Säkylä was built under Antti Piimänen after lightning burned its predecessor, and the Antti farmstead from Säkylä now stands in the Seurasaari Open Air Museum in Helsinki. Below the village lies Lake Pyhäjärvi, the largest lake in south-western Finland, prized for its clear water and among the most closely studied lakes in Europe.
The ridge itself shelters insects found nowhere else in Finland, and the Luonnonsuojelualue keeps part of this country wild. Stand at Vähänkylänlahti and look out over clear water towards the ridge: that is the Säkylä worth wearing.
