Smiling water tower
Narrow fjord
Old market town
Saxine, the smiling water tower, looks down on Sakskøbing with the girl's face the architect Flemming Skude painted on it in 1982, and it has been the town's landmark ever since. Below it, daily life runs along a long main street from east to west and over the bridge at the harbour, where Brogade joins the two halves of the town on either side of the narrow fjord. On the south side the old harbour silo, Qvades Silo, has become a tower of flats.
Pride is the feeling the place wears quietly. First recorded as Saxakopingh in 1240, the old market town once minted coins stamped with the two sheep shears still on its coat of arms, yet much of it has been renovated and looks well kept. Green spaces such as Doktorparken and Søparken and the sculpture Roepiger belong to the same everyday map.
Follow the water away from the harbour and the fjord, so narrow here that it could pass for a river, slowly widens out towards Smålandsfarvandet.
