On the Domaine Universitaire de Grenoble, students cross between lecture halls and the CUEF, where people from abroad come to learn French, and all of it lies in Saint-Martin-d'Hères rather than in Grenoble itself. The city begins right at the western edge of town, with the Parc Paul Mistral and the Musée de Grenoble a short way over the boundary.
What makes the town unusual is how recently it became a town at all. It stayed largely rural until the nineteenth century, on the flat floor of an old glacial valley that the Isère flooded again and again until dykes tamed it. The university arrived in the 1950s and 1960s and changed everything. Even the Hôtel de Ville is a former factory, converted in 1981, and the Arboretum Robert Ruffier-Lanche is its quiet green corner.
