Old ferry port

Leisure boats tie up in the harbour at Sagvåg, a sheltered bay that has served traders, boatbuilders and ferries for centuries. Until the 1960s the slipways here turned out wooden fishing boats and whalers, and Ottesens Skipsbyggeri worked the waterfront without a break for generations.

The village lies on the southwest coast of the island of Stord, a short way west of Leirvik, with Stord Airport, Sørstokken just up the road. It is the second largest community in Sunnhordland. Before the Triangle Link bridges and tunnel opened in 2001, this was the ferry port for Bømlo to the west. Today Wärtsilä makes automation systems for ships here, and Sagvåg Musikklag, the local brass band, is one of the things the village is best known for. Just to the northeast lies the old mining village of Litlabø, with Gruvemuseet på Litlabø and the miners' monument.

Whether you learned to row in the bay or marched with the band, Sagvåg on a map will bring the harbour straight back to you.
