Alte Brücke
Saarland's capital
On the St. Johanner Markt, the old market square of St. Johann, the Saar is only a few streets away and France is not much further. Saarbrücken is the capital and largest city of Saarland, its administrative, commercial and cultural centre, and it borders the French department of Moselle directly – the only German state capital that does.
The Alte Brücke, the stone bridge of 1546, still links the market side of the river with the Saarbrücker Schloss on the other bank. Further on stand the Ludwigskirche and the Basilika St. Johann, while the regional broadcaster has its seat up on the Halberg. This is a city formed in 1909 out of three towns, one that grew on the coal of the Saar basin and twice spent years apart from Germany – first as capital of the Territory of the Saar Basin, later of the Saar Protectorate. Identity here has never been quite simple.
If you studied at the university in the city forest, crossed into France for an afternoon, or simply grew up somewhere between the Saar and the Deutsch-Französischer Garten, this is your city, drawn street by street.
