Old Town
Main Market Square
Wisłok river
Stand by the Letni Pałac Lubomirskich and it is easy to believe that Rzeszów spent centuries as a private town and a magnate's residence, which it was until the middle of the nineteenth century. Casimir the Great granted it city rights, and for centuries it prospered on trade routes reaching from Europe towards the Middle East and the Ottoman Empire.
The memories it leaves are of a city in between: on both banks of the Wisłok, in the Sandomierz Basin, close to the foothills of the Beskids, once part of Ruthenian lands and later of the Austrian Empire. Its Old Town, Main Market Square, churches and synagogues are among the best preserved in Poland, and the Rzeszowskie Piwnice and the Pałac Jędrzejowiczów hold much of its story.
Today the city is the capital of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship, with Rzeszów–Jasionka Airport, two big universities and one of the highest standards of living in the country. For anyone who grew up here, the map will still lead first to the river, the square and the evening crowds at the Fontanna multimedialna.
