Château de la Malmaison
Napoleon and Joséphine
Impressionist painters
The Château de la Malmaison is what puts Rueil-Malmaison on the map: the home of Joséphine de Beauharnais, which served for a time as the headquarters of the French government and was Napoleon's last residence in France at the end of the Hundred Days. The château mattered so much that the town added its name to plain Rueil.
The Château de Bois-Préau stands close by, with a large park of its own. Yet the history here runs far deeper than the Empire. Merovingian kings came to hunt at a villa on this land, the Vikings destroyed an early royal residence on the Malmaison site, and builders near the Seine uncovered a Mesolithic camp and the remains of a cave lion. Later the Impressionists set up their easels along the riverbank, and Manet painted the house where his family stayed in Rueil.
Wherever you grew up in Rueil, from the river to the slopes of the Forteresse du Mont-Valérien, this is a town with a story on every corner.
