Cobbled streets
Langeland's main town
Rudkøbing is known for its cobbled streets and well-kept old townhouses, and as the main town of Langeland it is where the island's council sits. Tourism is one of its main trades now, and for many summers the town also hosted Langelandsfestivalen, a music festival aimed at families.
What sets Rudkøbing apart is the Ørsted family. The brothers Hans Christian and Anders Sandøe Ørsted were born in the old pharmacy on Gåsetorvet, where a statue of Hans Christian stands opposite their birthplace, and Anders has his own at Ørstedsparken. Langelands Museum and Rudkøbing Byhistorisk Arkiv keep the rest of the story, from Swedish sieges to the days when the harbour was crowded with the town's own ships and steam ferries ran to Copenhagen.
